Hidden Figures
HIDDEN FIGURES is the kind of movie that makes me happy that I get to do what I do for a living. This is one of my top 10 films of 2016. (Technically, it was released to qualifying theaters in 2016 in order to be eligible for the 2016 awards season). It is fun, funny, inspiring, and touching. It's already been nominated for several big awards, and I expect it will get many more nominations over the rest of the awards season. The cast is amazing. Octavia Spencer is out of this world,...

A Monster Calls
This is a film that will never be seen by most people. Unfortunately, the story looks and feels like it is more for children, however it is PG-13 and has a lot of very intense scenes and deep adult themes. Kids won't see it because it is too adult for them, and teens and adults won't see it because it is too childish. As for the movie, it is very good. It is heart-breaking and empowering, the effects are magnificent, and Lewis MacDougall and Felicity Jones are impressive to watch. Your heart will beg for the story...

Fences
This is easily one of the top five films of the year. It will be up for, and win, a ton of awards. While LA LA LAND will most likely take Best Picture, look for FENCES to be in the hunt for that award, and I would expect it to be a winner of Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Denzel and Viola are masterful in this film. It is some of the finest acting you will ever see on the big screen. And then, when you throw in the likes of Stephen Henderson and Mykelti...

Passengers
A Sci-Fi movie with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt? Yes, please! That was my initial reaction upon hearing that PASSENGERS was a real thing and coming to theaters in a few months. Then I saw the movie. And my reaction was something more like "Oh, that went south so fast!", to steal a line from Seth MacFarlane. Honestly, I don't think I've ever seen a movie go from amazing to terrible so fast. One moment, they are in critical trouble and the next they are saved...

Assassin's Creed
We have seen several video games turned into movies over the last few years. This may be one of the best in that category. The concept is fascinating, the story keeps you locked in, and the action is non-stop and incredible. I have never played, nor had any interest in the ASSASSIN'S CREED games, so I made sure to see this film with an AC expert. Bottom line...He love it. He felt this film completely captured the essence of the game, informed the non-gamers of the proper information, and gave us a compelling look into the AC...

Sing
I need to review this movie from two different points of view. First, I saw this film in a theater full of young kids. They LOVED it. They all came out raving about how good and funny it was. So, know that your kids will be happy to have seen SING. As for the parents, this movie is above average as far as animated movies go, but it is about 30 minutes too long. There are scenes that add nothing to the overall story, and other scenes that carry on far too long. ...

Why Him?
If you have seen the trailers for this film you know that it is, essentially, a raunchy rom-com. What you don't get from the trailers are: 1. How sweet this movie is. It is actually a nice, touching, heart-warming movie that will lift your holiday spirits. 2. How funny Megan Mullally is. There are several scenes where she steals the spotlight, and will nearly make you choke on your popcorn from laughing so hard. 3. How raunchy it really is. Wow! This is like Jason Bateman raunchy. If you aren't okay with a ton of...

Lion
This is a powerful film that draws you in and keeps you captivated every second of the way. At times it is almost too painful to watch if you keep remembering that it is a true story. Dev Patel give an outstanding, award-worthy performance, Nicole Kidman is amazing, and Sunny Pawar's acting will break you into pieces. The story itself is award-worthy, and has already been nominated for several big awards. It is a long-shot to win, but it would not surprise me if it did. If you are looking for a dramatic, yet...

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
The moral of this tale is simple: Don't mess with Jyn Erso. And if you do mess with Jyn Erso she will mess you up. Oh, and she gets it done, too! There were so many rumors flying around about this movie over the last several months, but the reality is nobody got to see it until release week. We heard it was bad: wrong. We heard they had to do major re-shoots to make it better: If they did, it worked. If you are not a STAR WARS fan, you can still see...

La La Land
This is the best movie of the year. Hands down. Second place is a distant thought. Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's on-screen chemistry is so perfect that you will almost need surgery by the end of the movie to remove the silly grin from your face. Their dance scene are reminiscent of Fred and Ginger, their banter is playful and filled with emotion, and their relationship is intoxicating. I can't remember the last time I saw a movie like this, and I'll bet it...

Collateral Beauty
This is one of those films that audiences will love and critics will hate. Critically speaking, everything about this movie is too perfect. The lives parallel uncannily well, everything plays out exactly the way it is supposed to, and basically it follows the tear-jerker, holiday-release formula down to the most minute detail. As far as anyone going to the movies is concerned this film is the equivalent of shooting saccharin straight into your bloodstream. On some level you know it isn't good, but you don't care at all because it makes you feel incredible....

Manchester By The Sea
In just about any other year this film would be an easy front runner for many awards, unfortunately for it, it was released in 2016. This year there are so many incredible films that I would have to say MANCHESTER BY THE SEA is a dark horse at best. In some cases is may even miss out on nominations for awards that it would have won in other years. Awards aside, this is still very much a film worth seeing. It is beautifully told, it's real, and it will stay with you for a few days...

Office Christmas Party
This is one of those films where you know exactly what you are getting going into it. It's full of hard-partying hilarity, a minimal plot, and a heartwarming touch to seal the deal. Typically the only thing that makes these movies even remotely worth watching is the comedy. Even if you know what's coming it's fun to laugh like crazy for 90 minutes. Unfortunately, this movie just isn't that funny. It has a couple of moderate moments of fun, but there are very few times where anyone would find it laugh-out-loud funny....

Miss Sloane
When I first heard about a movie coming out about a Washington D.C. political lobbyist, I immediately dreaded the idea of having to see it. Then I saw it. Holy cow, this movie is amazing! Jessica Chastain, who is incredible in every movie she's ever done, is even better in this one. The story is incredibly suspenseful, the characters are compelling, and the stakes are high. This is the kind of film that puts you on the edge of your seat and forces you to stay there until the...

Christine
For those of you that know the story of Christine Chubbuck, you know that the whole movie is leading up to THE moment. Before it gets to the moment, the film is okay. It's fairly slow and somewhat boring, but the acting is great. Rebecca Hall plays here character is a highly compelling and heartbreaking way. She and Michael C. Hall make this a film worth seeing. If you like weird, true stories, CHRISTINE is worth a watch.
