Jackie
Look out world, Natalie Portman is ready to accept all of the awards. I'm not saying she is going to win, because the competition in absolutely fierce this year, but she will be a finalist in many of the award shows. I would also expect this film to be very much in the running for costume design, cinematography, and production awards. The movie itself isn't great, but it serves as an acceptable conduit for Portman to excel. It is beautifully shot, and very dynamic in it's imagery, but it lacks the power one would expect from...

Incarnate
This film is essentially a mashup of THE EXORCIST and FLATLINERS, although it isn't as good as either one of those movies. If you are looking for scares, this is not your movie. If you are looking for a thriller with a few suspenseful moments, then INCARNATE is for you. It's fairly slow-moving, there isn't a lot in the way of back-story or explanation. Basically, the director wants you to blindly follow along and not worry about the massive plot holes. There are several horror movies that have come out this year that are...

Man Down
While this film may not be a front runner for any awards this year, it is definitely one worth seeing. It is a powerful and moving film that will move you to your core. I will say that this is the kind of movie that you have to use some patience. When it starts it feels like just another post-apocalyptic dystopian action flick, then it gets into some non-linear story-telling that doesn't feel like it is going anywhere, but once it all comes together and you begin to realize what is really happening it becomes a riveting...

Bad Santa 2
If you saw the first BAD SANTA movie, there really is no need for you to see this one. It's pretty much the same movie. It's full of dirty jokes, bad language, and Santa being naughty. If you are looking for nothing more than a few really big laughs, and can handle the raunchy nature of this film then you will have a good time. It isn't a boring or a bad movie. It's simply formulaic and immature. It is full of moments that will make you spit out your soda, squirm with...

Allied
If you like historical dramas and spy movies, you will find this film to be interesting and intriguing, but it won't be one of your favorites by a long shot. If you are a person just looking for a good movie to watch, you may want to look elsewhere. ALLIED is a really good film, but it isn't a movie for everyone. Marion Cotillard is wonderful in her role and Brad Pitt does a passable job as a military man. The story is compelling, but the execution of the plot isn't quite as good as it...

Moana
Ladies and gentlemen, FROZEN finally has a competitor. MOANA is a thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining, and exciting film that the whole family will love. It is full of incredible animation. funny jokes, and girl power. The story is amazing, and it is told in a way that is not only compelling, but it is accessible to children and adults. This is the perfect film to take the whole family out to see. Do not miss out on this instant classic.

Rules Don't Apply
This is a some-what interesting throwback to mid-20th century cinema. It has the look and feel of the golden age of Hollywood, unfortunately the movie just isn't that good. I'm not sure why studios allow a person to write, direct, and star in a film. If you don't have someone to tell you "no" then the movie isn't going to be as good as it could be. Typically those self-indulgent films are too long as well, in this case it about 30 minutes too long. The actors play their parts well,...

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them
I would like to send a personal "thank you" to J.K. Rowling for giving us the opportunity to travel back into her wizarding world once again. And beyond that, FANTASTIC BEASTS is a great movie. From the opening scene to the end credits I was captivated. The effects are second to none, the story is complex and interesting, and the characters are new and exciting. Eddie Redmayne is outstanding in this role. As far as I'm concerned he deserves award recognition for his acting, but he probably won't get it, because this isn't a "traditional" award-style film....

The Edge Of Seventeen
If John Hughes were still alive this is the kind of film he would have made. It is incredibly funny, heart-breakingly sad, and real. It feels like a throwback to the 80's brat-pack movies that changed so many lives. Haliee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson are a joy to watch. They take this film from incredible to a whole other level of amazing. This film should easily be in the finals for Comedy Of The Year for most award shows. Bring your awkward teenaged self to this movie and enjoy it completely....

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk
This film is terrible. From start to finish it is terrible. The whole thing feels like a poorly-acted, low-budget, propaganda-filled, made-for-tv movie. And when I say poorly acted, you know it's bad when Kristen Stewart is the most emotive one in the cast. This film is nearly two hours long, but it feels like about three. It would have made the movie much better if it were cut down to 90 minutes, but even then it still would have been a bad film. The plot is boring, the conflict is contrived, and...

Loving
This film is based on the true story of the couple that fought against marriage inequality all the way to the US Supreme Court. It is a powerful and moving film with award-worthy performances by Negga and Edgerton. As much as I liked this movie, I don't think it is going to do well this awards season. I would consider it a dark horse at best simply because the movie is slow and at times bogs down to almost a complete stop. It is a good and important film, and one very...

Nocturnal Animals
I really liked this movie, but it took me about two days after watching it before I came to that realization. NOCTURNAL ANIMALS is a strange, suspenseful, disturbing film that will make you squirm, think, and feel uncomfortable. It takes a lot of brain power and energy to stay engaged and on top of the plot, but for those that do, you will be treated to one of the most "OMG" endings you've seen all year. I do not mean this to sound degrading at all, but this is a movie made for...

Denial
This film is easily in my top 10 movies of 2016. It is incredibly powerful, impeccably acted, and the story is full of emotion. You will be angry, frustrated, disgusted, heart-broken, and elated and that's all in the first 45 minutes. I put this film on par with the likes of THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING and THE IMITATION GAME. It is an important, powerful film that will most likely make its way into the curriculum of history classes in high schools and colleges everywhere. I hope this...

Captain Fantastic
This may well be my favorite movie of the year. It is a beautiful and moving story with incredible acting performances by Viggo Mortensen and all of the children. It is the kind of film that makes you reflect on your own life and makes you want to be a better person. The flaws in each character are so real, and the pain they are all feeling comes through the screen into our hearts as we watch them deal with loss, life, and the unknown. The same is true with their innocence and joy that they...

Arrival
This is a film made for Sci-Fi fans. I think that most people will enjoy it on some level, but it won't be anywhere near your favorite film of the year. Sci-Fi fans, however, will be geeking out over this one for weeks. Cynical people will watch this movie and say it's a deeply serious take-off of BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. (Just watch the scene where Bill and Ted escape from the police station , and then think about Amy Adam's character meeting the Chinese president). It is a slow burn for the first hour and...
