TOP FILMS OF 2016

2016 was a banner year for Hollywood. There are several films that came out this year that would have easily been awards contenders if they had been released in just about any other year.  This is my list of the best films of 2016, I know it doesn't match your list, and that is great! That is what makes movies so fun and fascinating. We each see art in our own ways and it touches each of us in a different way. Please, let me know what your favorite films are, and in the meantime, I hope you enjoy my list!

#1 - LA LA LAND

TRAILER

This Hollywood throwback musical is by far the best movie of the year. Not only does this movie put a goofy smile on your face for two straight hours, but it gets your toes tapping with incredible music as well. The on screen chemistry between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, plus their incredible acting makes this film a pure joy to watch.

#2 - FENCES

TRAILER

If you want to see a master class in acting, you need to see FENCES. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis give performances that will garner them many awards this year. This is a powerful, moving film that is worth your time.

#3 - SWISS ARMY MAN

TRAILER

This film may have slipped past you this year, and for most people that is probably a good thing. For those of you that like weird, quirky films that allow the audience to think for themselves and draw their own conclusions as to what is really going on, you will absolutely love SWISS ARMY MAN. This is also one of the funniest films of the year.

#4 - HELL OR HIGH WATER

TRAILER

This is a spectacular old-fashioned Western set in modern day. It blurs the lines between good and bad in a compelling and emotional way. Ben Foster gives a performance that everyone should see.

 #5 - CAPTAIN FANTASTIC

TRAILER

This is an extraordinary and unique film that will break your heart and heal your soul. Viggo Mortensen gives the performance of a lifetime, and the child actors accompanying him make this film truly special.

#6 - HIDDEN FIGURES*

TRAILER

If you want to see a film that will make you proud and have you yelling, "you go, girl!" at the screen repeatedly, HIDDEN FIGURES is your movie. The ensemble cast is incredible and the story is fascinating.

*While this film will not be released wide until January 2017, it was made eligible for the 2016 awards season.

#7 - THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN

TRAILER

If John Hughes were still alive this is the kind of film he would have made. This movie will have you laughing, crying and feeling all of those crazy teenage emotions once again. Then throw in an award-worthy performance from Hailee Steinfeld and the scene-stealing comedy of Woody Harrelson and you have a near-perfect movie.

#8 - ME BEFORE YOU

TRAILER

If there is such thing as a hard-hitting comedy this film is it. The chemistry between Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin is beautiful to watch as is the story unfolding before your eyes. Beware though, this movie will make you ugly cry to the point of uncontrollable sobbing. But it is so worth it.

#9 - DEADPOOL

TRAILER

We didn't realize how much we needed an irreverent, foul-mouthed, anti-hero in our lives until DEADPOOL hit the big screen this year and became the second highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. Not only does this film offer up large doses of snark and self-deprecating humor, but it also gives audiences a great story with a ton of fun action.

#10 - DENIAL

TRAILER

This was a limited-release film that didn't get a lot of consideration, but if it had been released in a year with a little less competition it most-likely would have been a front-runner for a lot of awards. This is a superbly-acted drama, based on true events. The story is shocking and riveting, and the cast makes this film jump off the screen.
