Plot Summary
A woman forms a sexual relationship with a man that raped her
*Contains Spoilers

I typically don't review foreign films, but this one is getting so much awards attention that I couldn't let my thoughts go unread.

First off this film is directed by Paul Verhoeven. He's directed such "masterpieces" as SHOWGIRLS, BASIC INSTINCT, and many other lesser known but similar themed flicks. Therefore, almost any time you see the name Paul Verhoeven you should read "Guy that really wants to make pornos, but doesn't have the guts to just do it, so he wraps it around a crappy plot and calls it 'art'".

(He did also direct ROBOCOP and STARSHIP TROOPERS, so I will give him that).

Moving on...

This film is all about a woman trying to find the guy that raped her, and when she finally does she has a sexual relationship with him. This is the kind of stuff you HAVE to make up, because it would NEVER happen in real life. It's so far out of the realm of possibility that it doesn't even make sense as a movie. It just feels like somebody wanted to make a weird point and this was the only way they could think to do it.

There is another thing that is going on throughout the film that is similarly sexualized and stupid and not worth your time.

I'm sure that there are a ton of artsy-fartsy types out there saying this is a revolutionary film that empowers women, but I think it does the exact opposite. I think it objectifies women, then makes them give in to rape culture, and then it shows that a woman is so weak she can't even resist the comings-on of a man she knows assaulted her.

This film is utter crap from beginning to end.
