Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
Angelina Jolie returns to her magnificently evil ways in another beautiful and suspenseful chapter of the misunderstood life of Maleficent. As with the first film, this one is filled with spectacular imagery, near-perfect effects, and gorgeous scenery. Last time MALEFICENT was nominated for a costume design Oscar. This time I think it stands a better chance of actually winning that award. The costumes are truly incredible. I've rarely been so taken in by the wardrobe choices as I was while watching this movie. As for the plot, this film isn't quite as good...

Zombieland: Double Tap
ZOMBIELAND is one of those flicks that, if I see it on TV while I'm searching for something to watch, I will stop and watch every single time. It is a cult classic bordering on legendary status. It has all of the markers of a long-living film: Compelling, funny, suspenseful, great dialogue, fantastic acting, and long-running gags. It is near-perfect and one-of-a-kind. And then they made another one. There were so many ways that this new venture could have gone wrong. They could have slapped it together knowing that most of us...

Gemini Man
Will Smith is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history. Ang Lee is an Oscar-winning director. One would hope that a team like this would make an amazing film. They didn't. Yes, this movie does have some good suspense and an intriguing story line, but there is so much more about it that is below average. First, the effects are just plain terrible. It looks like they pulled out the CGI software from 2005 and decided to give it another shot. The young Will Smith never looks right, to the...

The Addams Family
Get ready to snap twice for one of the best animated movies of the year. THE ADDAMS FAMILY is fantastic. I took my 9 and 7 year old daughters and they both loved it. (Especially the 7 year old. Her favorite part was the song...which she now sings incessantly). The audience was filled with kids and their parents, and nobody seemed unhappy at the end. During the film there was a ton of laughter and excitement filling the room. The story itself is pretty basic and formulaic, but it is a movie made for...

Jexi
If you saw the trailer for this movie and said to yourself that it didn't look like this had much of a plot, go ahead and give yourself a thumbs up for being right. Here is how thin this movie is. The total running time (including end credits) is only 84 minutes, and there are no less than three musical montages, (read "filler"), in the film. It is truly disappointing that the likes of Adam Devine and Alexandra Shipp had to waste their incredible talents on a screenplay as terrible as this one. They did their best...

Joker
Welp. There is no need to go any further in the nomination process for best actor this year. The Academy might as well go ahead and mail the Oscar to Joaquin Phoenix's house. I'd bet the mortgage payment that there won't be a better acting performance this year. As for the movie. I loved it. And I hated it. This is, so far, my favorite film of the year. It is incredible and terrible in every way. I was completely taken in by the story, and yet so repulsed by...

Aquarela
If you've ever been knee-deep in the ocean you know what a powerful force water is. It gives life, and it is powerful enough to take life away. It forms mountains, and it is powerful enough to move them. Water is also beautiful. AQUARELA is essentially 90 minutes of starting at different bodies and forms of water. There is very little dialogue, it's almost completely a visual feast. If you think this sounds boring, you are probably right. If you think this sounds interesting, you are probably right. This film is...

Abominable
I love it when DreamWorks comes out with a new animated film because I know they are going to raise the bar once again. They did it with SHREK, they did it with HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, and they did it with TROLLS. And now they've done it again with ABOMINABLE. This film is fun and exciting. I was pulled into the story right from the start and stayed interested throughout the whole film. The kids I was with were even more enthralled than I was. They were leaning forward and bouncing on...

Judy
I must admit, I was not as smitten by this film as everyone around me was. Don't get me wrong, I found the movie to be very well done with incredible acting by Renee Zellweger, but for some reason it didn't quite hit me emotionally like it did others. The story is a tragedy in every way. From her manipulated life as a teen that led to her issues as an adult, to her loss of her money, children, and her dignity. It is a sad and hopeless tale. There are only slight glimpses of comedy...

Rambo Last Blood
Do you remember that scene in HOME ALONE where the kid is looking over a map of his house and plotting all of the traps he is going to set for the bad guys? And then we see little Kevin setting up the house of horrors? Well, imagine that movie all grown up and every trap that gets set is going to kill someone in a brutal and gory way. RAMBO LAST BLOOD, meet HOME ALONE. You two are going to get along great, you have a ton of stuff in common. Here's...

Ad Astra
When I saw that this movie had Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones and space pirates I couldn't wait for the day when it finally hit theaters. Now that I've seen it, I wish they had spent a little more time trying to make it better. On some levels I really enjoyed this movie. The cinematography, the lighting, the frightening feeling of being alone in space, and the music were all fantastic. I caught myself holding my breath several times during the last 30 minutes of the film. Unfortunately, the first 90 minutes...

Downton Abbey
If you are a fan of the DOWNTON ABBEY television show stop reading now and just head to the theater. There is nothing that I can say that would stop you from seeing this movie, nor would I want to stop you. Go, henceforth, and may joyous tidings be unto you. If you've never seen the show, but you are thinking about seeing the film, the good news is you won't be completely lost. Sure, there are a lot of inside things true fans will get that you won't, but you will understand who the characters are...

Hustlers
This is one of those films that could have been so great. It has a fascinating story, (based somewhat off of a true story), and great acting. Unfortunately, the editing and cinematography pull this movie back into the "average" category. There has been a lot of Oscar talk for Jennifer Lopez as Best Supporting Actress. She is very good, but I don't see her making the cut for a nomination. She doesn't stand out like one would typically see from an Oscar nominee. And that is mainly because Constance Wu and the rest of the cast are...

Brittany Runs A Marathon
I love a good inspirational film. A film that has the ability to motivate you, touch your soul, and give you all of the warm, tingly feelings. This is not one of those films. It wants to be, but it isn't. This is based on a true story, and the real story is quite inspirational. I'm not really sure how the people in charge of this movie managed to swing and miss when it came down to it, but they did. The whole time I was watching the...

It Chapter 2
If you haven't seen the first movie stop reading now. You absolutely have to see the first film for anything in this movie to make sense. For those of you that have already seen the first movie, get ready for a crazy ride. Okay, so, I need you to see this movie right away because we need to talk. There is so much going on in this nearly 3-hour freak-fest that we all will need people to help us just to figure out what is going on and why. While this movie isn't...
