THE PROM
Do you love musicals? Are you a fan of Broadway? Do you consider MAMA MIA to be one of the greatest movies of all time? Well, get ready to move it down a notch, because it is time to go to THE PROM. This is a fantastically funny musical that is essentially FOOTLOOSE for a new generation. The songs are catchy, and the lyrics are hysterical. The costumes are out of this world, and the story is captivating. This film is an emotional roller coaster in the...

Half Brothers
When I saw the trailer for this film I thought it was going to attempt to be a riotously hilarious road trip, buddy comedy. Then I saw the film and realized it was something much more than that. While it does have several laughs, it isn't nearly as funny as your typical, straight-up comedy. But what it is lacking in laughs, it makes up for with a sweet story full of heart. Each of the main characters has a deep backstory that is revealed throughout the film. And as more and more...

All My Life
If you are a fan of romantic comedies, this is one of the best you will ever see. It is a laugh-out-loud funny, painfully adorable, heart-meltingly, gooey story played out by two of the most beautiful people in Hollywood. Oh, and it is also a film that will rip your heart out, smash it into a million pieces, put those pieces in a blender, but then give it back to you in the form of a love smoothie. So come to the theater prepared. And by "prepared" I mean, bring along all of your girlfriends and...

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Wow! We may have lost the man and the talent of Chadwick Boseman, but he left us one final, beautiful, gift with his performance in MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM. And while it is a gift to us, it is also a performance that will most assuredly win him many acting awards. Add to his astounding performance the earth-shattering performance of Viola Davis and you have the beginnings of a very special film. I will be shocked if either Boseman or Davis are left out of the acting races. As of now, I consider both of them to...

Mank
If you are a fan of old, classic Hollywood. This is a must-see film. It is a complete homage to cinema and the people behind it in the early 1940s. One of the most fascinating aspects of this film is how they incorporate the script writing into the film itself. You'll see scene setting descriptions pop up throughout the film written in the appropriate style and type for a true Hollywood screenplay. It keeps bringing you back to the fact that this is a movie about writing a movie. The film is...

Godmothered
I watched this film with my family a couple of weeks ago and two things immediately stuck out to me. 1. Isla Fisher is in a Disney movie? 2. Jillian Bell is in a Disney movie!?!?!?!?!?!? Kudos to the casting director on this one. Bell, best known for being the poster child for raunchy comedies, plays a Fairy Godmother in training who ends up in the real world and hasn't got a clue about how anything works. Fisher plays a single mom, jaded by the struggles of adulthood,...

Black Bear
This is a perfect example of a self-indulgent, meta film that the Hollywood elite and self-proclaimed movie snobs are going to adore. Why? Because it barely makes sense and has no ending. Therefore, it must be an amazing work of art that the lower classes are too stupid to figure out. When you hear words like "ambitious", and "high-risk", and descriptions using French words in an otherwise English description, that means the film is too pretentious for its own good. The main issue with this movie is that it takes too long for...

Ammonite
This is one of those films where I feel like I saw something completely different than just about every other film critic. I keep hearing "Oscar contender" thrown around for this one, but I just don't see it. Sure, it's a historical drama that speaks to issues of the today, which are always markers for at least a decent awards run. But this one is missing one massive component that most major awards contenders have. It's not compelling in the slightest. In fact, I would go so far as to say it is boring. ...

The Croods: A New Age
If you saw the first film in this franchise you know how fantastic it was. This one may even be better! Once again the animation is beautiful, fun, and imaginative. There are several scenes that will have you wondering how they were able to manage making something so amazing. The story is entertaining, interesting, and wildly funny. My whole family laughed out loud, and hard, several times during the film. It even managed to keep the interest of my 8 year old, who finds nothing longer than 10 minutes interesting. ...

Fatman
When I heard the plot line, "a kid hires a hitman to kill Santa," my first thought was, that sounds like it could be a pretty funny movie. Then I found out it was an R-rated action flick starring Mel Gibson and Walton Goggins and my excitement level went all the way to 11. This is not your kids' Christmas movie. This is a brutal, bloody, foul-mouthed film that will have you cheering with every ringing gun blast. This is the kind of movie that makes DIE HARD look like a Christmas movie...oh,...

Superintelligence
For a long time Melissa McCarthy seemed to be a one-trick pony, but then she starred in films like SPY, THE BOSS, and CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME and proved to us that she is a master of her craft. Now, with SUPERINTELLIGENCE, she shows us that she can play a smart, confident, loving person while leading a very funny rom-com. Perhaps one of the best aspects of this film is that it is rated PG, but it doesn't lose any of its punch. I was able to watch it with my 10 year old daughter...

Last Call
Well, here it is. This is easily one of my favorite films of the year. There is nothing much to say except this is a must-see film. If you are a fan of artistic cinema you have to see this. If you are a fan of dramatic performances, you have to see this. If you are a fan of Dylan Thomas, you have to see this. If you've liked any of the films nominated for Best Picture in the last 10 years, you have to see this. While I still have more films to see before...

Vanguard
VANGUARD is the best comedy of the year. There is only one problem. It's not supposed to be a comedy. From the amateurish CGI lion, to the car chase scenes filmed at 30 miles per hour and then sped up on film, to the early 1990's-looking graphics superimposed onto large computer monitors, it looks like the effects budget for this movie was somewhere around $36.25 (plus tax). But the good news is the bad effects make for some great laughs. Aside from the effects (and some truly atrocious, yet refreshingly hilarious, acting by...

The Last Vermeer
I knew nothing about this real-life story going into this movie. Now that I have seen it, I want to find all of the information I can about it. This is a fascinating story, told in a creative, entertaining, and dramatic way. You wouldn't think that a film about a trial over stolen art would be overly exciting, but this movie is filled with action, suspense, intrigue, and drama from the opening scene to the chaotic climax. There wasn't a single moment where I was bored or my mind slipped out of the story. It is...

The Nest
Imagine a movie that opens with the first four minutes being barely more than two establishing shots. One, a shot of the outside of the main character's house, and one, through the window, of the main character while he talks on the phone, (with no audible dialogue for us to hear). Between those two shots is another, long establishing shot of a close up of the main character before 20 seconds of "action", which is him dialing and talking on the phone. Did that paragraph bore you? If so, imagine how much more boring it would...
