Spirit Untamed
If you have been wanting to get back to the theaters and see something with your whole family, look no further than Spirit Untamed. This is a fun, exciting, and touching film that will entertain the kids and keep the parents engaged as well. The animation is beautiful, the story is interesting, there are plenty of jokes to keep you laughing, and there are several heartfelt moments to give you a range of emotions. It's the kind of film that a 6 year old will enjoy, and so will a 12 year old. And parents, you...

A quiet Place Part II
John Krasinski is my Hollywood hero. He took a fantastic story, added another dimension to it, and gave us another smart, terrifying, and suspenseful film. And what's even better about this movie is that he fixes the one, big complaint that most of us had about the first film. We finally get to see how the whole thing started. If you have not seen the first movie, it is a must watch. Not only because it is so good, but because this one assumes you already know everything from the first film. If you try to watch...

Cruella
Disney has proven that they have the ability to make great live-action remakes of some of their best animated works. This, however, is a new twist. Giving us a live action back story of an animated villain was probably a tough decision to make, but I'm glad the project got the green light. This is a wild ride right from the start. It's filled with action, comedy, intrigue, and wonderful characters. The story is juicy and filled with all sorts of interesting twists and turns. It clocks in at just over two hours, but it never felt...

Dream Horse
We've all dreamed about striking it rich by winning the lottery, or some other nearly impossible, but fun way. Some of us just dream about it, others make those dreams become a reality. This film is all about one such woman who refused to be told "no" when it came to her idea of owning a champion race horse. This is a touching, heart-warming, inspirational film that is suitable for the entire family. The younger kids may not understand some of it, and they may get distracted because of the slow pace, but if they like...

Final Account
This is one of the most fascinating and infuriating documentaries I have ever seen. It is fascinating because you get to hear first-hand accounts of the atrocities that occurred in Germany during WWII. It is infuriating because, even after all of the years and all of the evidence, many of them still refuse to admit what happened. This is the kind of documentary that should be required viewing in school. It shows how easily things can go bad when groupthink is the norm. It sheds light on how many of the Germans didn't agree with what...

Army of the Dead
Director Zack "I can't find the edit button on my computer" Snyder is back again with a 2 1/2 hour long zombie flick to follow his four hour long recut of Justice League. In this case he took what would have been a really fun and exciting 100 minute movie and stretched it out into a decent, but too slow 150 minute movie. I will give him credit though for actually giving us character development this time. It's nice to watch a movie and actually care what happens to the main characters. It may not be...

Finding You
I'm very torn over this movie. On one hand I want everyone in Nashville to see it because the producer, director, and lead actress are all from Franklin, TN. On the other hand, it's really just an okay movie. It's the kind of film that I would usually say is worth seeing once it comes out digitally, but not worth spending theater prices. However, since we are just getting out of this pandemic, and theaters need our business, and this is a "local" film, I say it's worth a trip to the theater so you can support local art. ...

Spiral
Here we go. Another comedian taking his turn as a homicide detective. This time it is Chris Rock, and while he does a pretty decent job of making the jump out of comedy, there are several scenes where he really oversells it. This is another in the long line of horror flicks in the Saw franchise. As with most of the others, it does a good job of focusing on an aspect of social commentary, but it is also filled with clichés, cringey dialogue, and one-dimensional characters. The worst part of this...

Profile
The director for this film has a very specific style. If you've seen Unfriended, Unfollowed, or Searching then you know what I mean. He loves to have almost the entire film play out on a computer screen or other technological devices. The first time around it was unique and interesting. The second time was okay. The third time felt tired. Now it feels like a bad stunt. The bad thing is that this story is so compelling that it could have been a fantastic "regular" movie. It loses a lot by using...

Wrath of Man
I have come to the scientific conclusion that Jason Statham does not age. I don't know how he does it, but he looks and acts the same way he did nearly 20 years ago when he made The Transporter. And as is the case in almost all of his films, he spends the majority of this one destroying those that want to destroy him with perfectly choreographed elegance and brutality. This may not be one of his best films, but it is still worthy of being seen. It's a tad slow in some places, and it...

Here Today
One of the great sins in Hollywood is not having someone there to tell you "no" when you need it. That is why 9 out of 10 films that are written, directed, and starring the same person are terrible films. But that means that 1 out of 10 are good, and sometimes great. Here Today is a great film. This was written, directed, and stars Billy Crystal, and he pretty much nailed it. Not only is it funny and endearing, but it feels like it could be a real story lived out...

The Mitchells Vs. The Machines
So far 2021 has been a tough go for movies, but it has been a banner year for animated films. Films like Raya And The Last Dragon, Arlo The Alligator Boy, and The Croods: A New Age have all been smash hits, (relatively speaking as we continue to climb out of the pandemic). Now we have a new animated offering from Netflix and it is amazing. This movie has it all. It is funny, heartwarming, filled with action and slapstick comedy, and the dialogue is brilliant. There are several "aside" jokes that will have parents belly laughing...

Without Remorse
Michael B. Jordan has quickly become one of the biggest and best stars in Hollywood. He can play a wide variety of characters over several genres, and he almost always makes the movie better. In this film he plays a special forces soldier and a family man who is well-balanced, but doesn't think twice about doing what needs to be done to accomplish the mission. But when things take an unexpected turn he quickly comes to the conclusion that it is him or them. This feels a lot like Tom Clancy's answer...

Together Together
What do you get when you put two great actors together, but the script you give them doesn't allow them to have their own personalities and they have no chemistry? You get a 90 minute movie that feels like it is three hours long. I am a huge fan of Ed Helms, and the work he does with the script he was given is as good as anyone could possibly hope it to be. Unfortunately, the script is so flat and off-puttingly awkward that his talents are wasted. The film does have a...

Vanquish
Have you ever watched a movie that is so bad that it is almost good? Well, if you can't say that you have then gather up all of your sharp-witted friends and que up Vanquish this weekend. I have seen well over 5,000 movies in my life and this one ranks right up there as one of the worst of all time. This is bordering on The Room level of bad. This is the kind of film you beg the writers of Mystery Science Theater 3000 to roast someday, because...
