Thank You For Your Service
Every single person over the age of 13 should see this movie. It's not the greatest movie ever made. In fact, it's pretty average as far as Hollywood films go. But, once you see this film you will never say the words "Thank you for your service" as a throw away kindness again. Most of us will never know, nor could we even remotely handle, the hell that many of our military men and women have faced. Then they come back home and are expected to just roll back into their former lives while...

All I See Is You
It's ironic that a film that focuses on sight, or lack thereof, will not be seen by very many people. This film is way too "artsy fartsy" for the mainstream moviegoer, but it isn't deep and disturbing enough to appease the elite cinephiles. Blake Lively is amazing in her role, but her counterpart, Jason Clarke comes across more creepy and desperate than he should. Also, the stakes aren't high enough for us to really care about the outcome. The events that transpire are mildly suspenseful, but I never really felt like anything important was truly on the...

Geostorm
You know how some movies are so bad they are good? Well, this one is almost that bad. Which means that it is just bad. This is the kind of movie with moments where the world is literally crashing down around people and they are having long drawn-out conversations or moments of dramatic pause before they do the thing they need to do to stop the world from falling apart. It is the kind of stuff that makes movies like this eye-rollingly stupid. When you thrown on top...

Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down The White House
If you are old enough to know about the Watergate scandal and fallout then this film will fascinate you. For those that don't know Mark Felt was a Deputy Director of the FBI and became the mole that leaked all of the Watergate information to the press. He was suspected to be the informant known only as Deep Throat, but it wasn't proven until he purposefully outed himself several years ago. I don't know how much of this movie is 100% factual, but I can tell you that it is based...

Only The Brave
If you've ever lived in the southwest you know about the Hotshots. They are people that put their lives on the line constantly to save lives and property, and it is anything but an easy job. These guys aren't out in the middle of a field with a truck and water hoses. They are helicoptered in, dropped into the bowels of hell and then have to chainsaw, shovel, and chop their way back to safety. This film does a great job of showing how hard and dangerous their work is without going over the top and making...

The Snowman
This movie is magical! It is one of the few films I've ever seen that makes two hours feel like four. That can only be accomplished by some sort of time-bending Voodoo, or maybe it's just a really bad movie. I can't recall ever seeing a film this disjointed, confusing, convoluted, and slow. There are major characters that don't add anything to the story, the editing is literally laughable at how bad it is, and the story is full of holes and moments of convenience. (And sometimes those moments combine to make for eye-rollingly terrible scenes). ...

Boo 2! A Madea Halloween
If you are looking for funny this movie will give it to you. If you are looking for a cohesive, slightly intelligent story, this is not the movie for you. Basically, this is a conduit for Tyler Perry to stand around and tell jokes. Literally half of the movie consists of long drawn out scenes where people are doing nothing but bantering back and forth about nothing to do with furthering the plot. They are funny jokes, but in the end they are useless. Perhaps the biggest tragedy is that it...

Same Kind Of Different As Me
This is a nice and inspiring film. It isn't great when compared to award-winning Hollywood films, but it is one that has a compelling story and will make you feel things. Djimon Hounsou steals the show with his performance. To see him change throughout the film is a joy to watch. The rest of the cast does a fine job, but nothing compared to Hounsou. If you are looking for a film that will inspire you, make you pull into your faith, and possibly ugly cry then you should see this movie. It...

The Florida Project
This is one of the most powerful, beautiful, wonderful, and heartbreaking films I've seen in a few years. The story is filled with incredible imagery as we see these young kids try desperately to hang onto their innocence while they are constantly surrounded by depravity. It's a world where adults act like children and the children have to be adults to survive. Willem Dafoe has got to be the front runner for the Best Supporting Actor awards. He gives a performance that is as beautiful as his character is tragic. Brooklynn Prince is another...

Marshall
While this film doesn't give you a history lesson on the life and successes of Justice Marshall, it does give you a good sense of the man and his driving forces. The story is powerful and provoking, the direction and editing are masterful, and the acting is incredible. Boseman controls the screen just as Marshall could control a room. Gad gives, arguably, the best performance of his career. And, while I know it is a long shot, Sterling K. Brown deserves an Oscar nod for his portrayal of Joseph Spell. His work in this film is...

Happy Death Day
If you like horror films, you'll probably find this one to be fun and somewhat unique. The premise is odd and never explained, but as long as you are willing to just go with it and enjoy the story for what it is, you'll most likely be satisfied. The best thing I can say for this movie is that I didn't have one single moment where I rolled my eyes at the stupidity on the screen. As campy as it is, the story is actually fairly smart and interesting. There are some...

The Foreigner
On the surface, this is an intriguing and compelling action movie. Unfortunately, it gets bogged down in the politics of the IRA to the point where it is difficult to figure out who knows what and who did what to whom. Jackie Chan does a great job in his role as a tormented father. Pierce Brosnan makes an interesting adversary. But the secondary characters are paper thin at best. It's tough to care about the complex story when you don't really care about the characters and their well being. This is the kind...

My Little Pony: The Movie
Here's the deal. You don't need a review for this movie. If you are the parent or guardian of a young girl that likes MY LITTLE PONY, take them to see this movie. They will love it. You will probably want to scratch your eyes out and jab pointy sticks into your ears, but this isn't about you. My only reviewish point that I will make is that my 5 year old was a bit frightened at a couple of fairly intense scenes. She is very much on the timid side, so...

Blade Runner 2049
This may be one of the biggest movies of the year. It's big budget, big production, big in scope, big-name actors, big sound, and big expectations. Unfortunately, the movie itself is medium-sized when it comes to how good it is. I would probably put it in the top 20 films I've seen this year, but it's not even close to the top 10, and we still have a ton of great films to be released this year. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is incredible. It's loud, disturbing, and perfect for the film....

The Mountain Between Us
If you've ever watched a movie and had a moment where you see something about to happen in the story and your whole person wants to yell at the screen to tell the actors, "don't do it!", you'll know how I felt for the last half of this film. The good news is this movie gives you some good suspense and beautiful scenery. Beyond that the film is slow and the story is not worth your theater dollars. The acting is fine, but there isn't a lot of good material for them to work with. ...
