The Florida Project
This is one of the most powerful, beautiful, wonderful, and heartbreaking films I've seen in a few years. The story is filled with incredible imagery as we see these young kids try desperately to hang onto their innocence while they are constantly surrounded by depravity. It's a world where adults act like children and the children have to be adults to survive. Willem Dafoe has got to be the front runner for the Best Supporting Actor awards. He gives a performance that is as beautiful as his character is tragic. Brooklynn Prince is another...

Marshall
While this film doesn't give you a history lesson on the life and successes of Justice Marshall, it does give you a good sense of the man and his driving forces. The story is powerful and provoking, the direction and editing are masterful, and the acting is incredible. Boseman controls the screen just as Marshall could control a room. Gad gives, arguably, the best performance of his career. And, while I know it is a long shot, Sterling K. Brown deserves an Oscar nod for his portrayal of Joseph Spell. His work in this film is...

Happy Death Day
If you like horror films, you'll probably find this one to be fun and somewhat unique. The premise is odd and never explained, but as long as you are willing to just go with it and enjoy the story for what it is, you'll most likely be satisfied. The best thing I can say for this movie is that I didn't have one single moment where I rolled my eyes at the stupidity on the screen. As campy as it is, the story is actually fairly smart and interesting. There are some...

The Foreigner
On the surface, this is an intriguing and compelling action movie. Unfortunately, it gets bogged down in the politics of the IRA to the point where it is difficult to figure out who knows what and who did what to whom. Jackie Chan does a great job in his role as a tormented father. Pierce Brosnan makes an interesting adversary. But the secondary characters are paper thin at best. It's tough to care about the complex story when you don't really care about the characters and their well being. This is the kind...

My Little Pony: The Movie
Here's the deal. You don't need a review for this movie. If you are the parent or guardian of a young girl that likes MY LITTLE PONY, take them to see this movie. They will love it. You will probably want to scratch your eyes out and jab pointy sticks into your ears, but this isn't about you. My only reviewish point that I will make is that my 5 year old was a bit frightened at a couple of fairly intense scenes. She is very much on the timid side, so...

Blade Runner 2049
This may be one of the biggest movies of the year. It's big budget, big production, big in scope, big-name actors, big sound, and big expectations. Unfortunately, the movie itself is medium-sized when it comes to how good it is. I would probably put it in the top 20 films I've seen this year, but it's not even close to the top 10, and we still have a ton of great films to be released this year. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is incredible. It's loud, disturbing, and perfect for the film....

The Mountain Between Us
If you've ever watched a movie and had a moment where you see something about to happen in the story and your whole person wants to yell at the screen to tell the actors, "don't do it!", you'll know how I felt for the last half of this film. The good news is this movie gives you some good suspense and beautiful scenery. Beyond that the film is slow and the story is not worth your theater dollars. The acting is fine, but there isn't a lot of good material for them to work with. ...

Flatliners
Well, that was two hours I'll never get back. Throw on top of it that I'm pretty sure I am dumber for having witnessed this mess, and the conclusion is this is a really bad movie. It's slow, it doesn't explain anything, it can't decide if it wants to be a suspenseful thriller or a slasher flick, and it gives us some of the worst editing and storytelling we've seen in quite some time. (There was one jump cut that was so bad that I literally said, "what the heck was that?"...

American Made
Imagine if Maverick from TOP GUN left the military, joined the CIA and made millions smuggling drugs and guns for the US government. Well, you don't have to imagine it...you can watch Tom Cruise play it out in AMERICAN MADE. (Not the Top Gun part, but hey, it's Tom Cruise flying a plane...I had to go there). If the real story is even half as true as this movie, Barry Seal was an insane genius. From the very beginning of this movie it makes you strap in and hold on for dear life for...

Battle of the Sexes
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie for several reasons. First, the real-life match has lived on in infamy for 40-something years now. Second, Emma Stone and Steve Carell are two of my favorite actors. And finally, who doesn't like a good-natured man versus woman story? Then I saw the movie. (Insert The Price Is Right loser sound here). The trailers made this movie look like it was going to be all about the match and the lead up to the match, instead we get a long slow story about their relationships...

'Til Death Do Us Part
This is the latest offering in the long line of formulaic, scorned lover films with catchy titles, like WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS and THE PERFECT GUY. It's not a bad movie, but it isn't great either. It feels a lot like an above average Lifetime movie. The storytelling is jumpy, the pacing is all over the place, the continuity is an afterthought, and the acting is okay at best. If you are in the mood for a decent thriller this film will be okay. I highly doubt that very many people will come...

Woodshock
Away! To my made up dictionary we go! WOODSHOCK - noun - (WUD shawk) - The stiff, comatose, yet painful stinging sensation of one's body and brain after having to watch a movie made by people with way more money than sense and are friends with studio people that...

The Lego Ninjago Movie
As far as animated movies go, this one is outstanding. However, in the LEGO universe of movies this one is a distant 3rd when compared to THE LEGO MOVIE and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE. It is fun and irreverent like the Lego films before it, but it is quite a bit slower and much less entertaining than its predecessors. If you have kids that love Legos take them to see this movie. They will enjoy it thoroughly. The good news is that there is enough entertainment to keep adults interested as well. (You won't be as excited...

Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Ladies and gentlemen, Sir Elton John kicking butt karate-style while wearing a feather suit and diamond-studded high-heel boots. That is all you need to know about the awesomeness of this movie. Seriously, Elton John completely steals the show. If you didn't see the first KINGSMAN film, you need to do so before jumping into this one. If you haven't seen the first one, this one will make sense, but you will miss out on a lot of character depth and development as well as some continued story lines. Don't worry though, the first film is totally...

Friend Request
Well, this is the one. It's the movie after the movie. The first horror flick released after IT hit theaters. Because of that there is no doubt that the two movies are going to be compared to one another. There is only one problem with that. There is no comparison. Where IT was smart, suspenseful, and had a compelling story, FRIEND REQUEST plays to your base fears, it's not even remotely scary unless you count the "jump out and say boo" moments, and the story is ridiculously lame. It takes forever...
