The Belko Experiment
This may well be the smartest slasher flick ever made. That said, it is still a slasher flick. So, if you aren't into horror films, or you can't handle gruesome violence, you should go ahead and cross this one off your list and never think of it again. For those of you that do enjoy 90 minutes of mayhem, you should run to the theater as fast as you can. You will be treated to something that I can only describe as a mashup of LORD OF THE FLIES, THE HUNGER GAMES, and OFFICE SPACE. ...

Kong: Skull Island
In a long line of Hollywood monster movies, this is another one. If all you need out of a movie like this is a bunch of people shooting at animals that are hundreds of times larger than them, then grab your popcorn and have a blast. If you need a bit more than that in your movie-going experience, you should probably go ahead and skip this one. You know it isn't a great movie when you have thoughts like, "Wow, I sure am glad that John C. Reilly is in this movie. He's carrying the whole film."...

Before I Fall
BEFORE I FALL is basically a mashup of THE BREAKFAST CLUB, MEAN GIRLS, and GROUNDHOG DAY, but mostly the good parts. This is an interesting premise that, one the one hand makes you wish you could relive moments of your life, but on the other hand, shows you how terrible that could be. The film starts out in an obnoxious way with about 30 minutes of thoroughly self-centered and shallow behavior all set to a soundtrack that just screams, "hey, listen to me! I'm the soundtrack and I'm cool, too!" After that...

Logan
I was skeptical when I heard there was going to be another Wolverine movie, but the trailers intrigued me. Now that I have seen the film, I am thrilled that it turned out as well as it did. While this is another comic book movie, parents need to know that this film is rated R for a reason. There is adult language throughout and the violence is brutal. This isn't the comic book violence we are used to seeing in films like THE AVENGERS. This is much more along the lines of DEADPOOL. (Speaking of DEADPOOL,...

The Shack
This is one of those interesting films where it is too long, the acting isn't great, and the dialogue is repetitive and awkward, but the story is so powerful and moving that it supersedes all of the negatives. If you haven't read the book, this is an amazing story about forgiveness and love. It is told in a fascinating way that keeps you engaged throughout the story. The interesting thing about this film is that there is something for everyone. No matter where you are in life, you will be able to...

Rock Dog
It's not really fair to judge a film by comparison to other films, but this one was released just three weeks after THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE and I can't help but see how much ROCK DOG pales in comparison to it. Not only is it not in the same ballpark, but they aren't even playing the same game. I took my young daughters to see this movie. One of them thought it was okay, the other didn't like it. I did hear them both giggling a couple of times, but I also looked over at them...

Get Out
I must admit, when I saw that this was a horror film written and direct by Jordan Peele I was a bit skeptical that the comedic genius could switch genres and make a decent film. Well, he did more than that, he made a GREAT movie full of suspense, comedy, and racial satire. GET OUT is suspenseful, but it isn't scary per se. There are a few jump-out-and-say-boo moments, but those are there just for show. The real creepiness of this film is in the story. As the movie progresses and the puzzle pieces fall into place...

Collide
If you like expensive cars, high speed chases, and you don't care about things like plot holes or good writing, or good acting you'll love this movie. For everyone else, you need to be willing to check your brain at the door if you are going to enjoy this film at all. This film does offer some great action scenes in some super sexy sports cars, a decent amount of suspense, and a good twist (even though the twist relies on a massive plot hole, but remember, we've already checked our brains at the door). It's...

Fist Fight
When a 10 year old girl steals the show by singing a Big Sean song you can figure out a couple of things about the movie. First, it's going to be raunchy and second, the rest of the movie isn't as funny as one would hope it would be. All of the characters in this film are fun and funny, but everyone plays exactly to type. Charlie Day is the same person he is in almost every other movie he's done, and the same can be said for Jillian Bell and Tracy Morgan. Ice Cube does a...

The Great Wall
Hey, Hollywood. *Taps microphone* Is this thing on? Are you aware that it is 2017 and the world no longer wants movies about a "Great White Hope"? Apparently not. Also, are you aware that the sci-fi trope of "One brain to rule them all", a.k.a. "Kill the queen and they all die", should NEVER be used again, because we've seen it in dozens of sci-fi films? Again, apparently not. Seriously, this film could have been done 10 different ways without having to bring in a white guy, (who has never even...

A Cure For Wellness
This film has a couple of interesting things going for it. There is a good mystery and there are several moments of hold-your-breath suspense. The story is interesting and will draw you in for the first 3/4 of the film. But then the ending happens. Oh, dear reader, the last 20 minutes of this film are so horrifically bad, so insanely stupid that it almost completely undoes all of the mystery and suspense leading up to that point. I could literally hear groans from the audience around me as this film fell apart....

The Lego Batman Movie
Yes! Yes! Yes! Admittedly unfairly, my expectations for this movie were sky high, and THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE lived up to every single one of them! Not only does this film deserve to win next year's Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but at this point it deserves a nomination for Best Picture. It is that good. I took my young daughters to see this film and they loved it, but they didn't love it as much as their mother and I did. Adults need to see this movie. It is full of what I...

Fifty Shades Darker
Really? We're doing this again? I could probably just copy and paste my review of the first film here and it would suffice, but I'll be better than the film and try to make this somewhat original. When I saw the second trailer for this movie I was legitimately intrigued. It featured a strange girl that seemed to be stalking Anastasia, and it felt like the movie might genuinely have some suspense, conflict and a decent story line. I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I saw this two-hour long movie and...

John Wick: Chapter 2
If you didn't see the first JOHN WICK film stop reading this right now and go watch it! I'll wait. Hmm dee hmm dee hmm hmmmmm. Okay, welcome back. Great movie, right? JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2 is just as good. Yes, at its core this is just a graphically violent action flick with a guy that is apparently impossible to seriously maim much less kill, but this film is so much more than that. It continues to expand on one of the most unique and...

Moonlight
This is a fascinating, slice-of-life, film that has moments of brilliance. It isn't a great movie, but it is a movie that you shouldn't miss if you are someone that goes to the theater at least once a week. If you are a casual movie-goer you will probably find this film to be somewhat slow and awkward. Mahershala Ali's acting is award-worthy and Naomie Harris gives a performance that will break you into pieces. The trio of actors playing the lead character all do an amazing job. They may not be up for many awards, but...
