The Happytime Murders
Every so often we get the joy of seeing a new and unique film that breaks the mold and gives us all hope that there is still some creativity left in Hollywood. This is not that film. This is a horrible waste of your time and everybody else's time that had the displeasure of working on this movie. It is barely funny because it spends most of the movie trying to be a somewhat serious murder mystery. It's a basic mystery movie at best because when it should be giving us twists we don't...

AXL
This is essentially the exact same movie as MONSTER TRUCKS, MAX STEEL, CHAPPIE, and every other corny flick where a couple of slackers manage to beat the government at their own game by accidentally figuring out the hidden powers of the newly found object. The only difference is that this one is much worse than those other films. The story never really goes anywhere, the effects are okay at best, the action in laughable, and the bad guys are an embarrassment to bad guys everywhere. There were several moments where I found myself looking at my watch,...

Mile 22
Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have teamed up for some very interesting and good action movies. This film is by far the worst of that bunch. The opening scene should be one that is full of suspense and precise action. Instead it falls flat to the point of almost being boring. Even when the action starts the excitement level never really gets going. Once into the meat of the movie it becomes quickly apparent that there are very few characters, if any, to root for. Everyone is a jerk, or evil, or an evil...

Alpha
If they gave an Academy Award for location scouting, ALPHA would surely win it. This film is filled with beautiful and amazing scenery. Unfortunately, that is where all of the awards talk would end. The rest of the movie is okay at best. This is one of those films that I'm not really sure how it got made. It really doesn't have an audience. This is evidenced by the change of tone in the trailers over the last several months. At the beginning of the year this movie had a trailer that was dark, ominous, and filled...

Crazy Rich Asians
This is one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in a very long time. It is a film to which everyone that has ever dealt with someone else's family can relate. This movie is filled with beautiful scenery, a compelling story, and wonderful acting. The leads, Constance Wu and Henry Golding, are great and you'll fall in love with both of them, but Awkwafina steals the show. She is hilarious, magnetic, and crazy awesome fun. We got a little bit of her personality in OCEAN'S 8, but it really shines through in this film. She is...

The Meg
There isn't much to say about THE MEG other than it is stupid, ridiculously awesome fun. That breaks down to about 20% fun, 10% awesome, 20% ridiculous, and 50% stupid. I don't say this often, but this is a movie that was begging to have an R rating, but they pulled their punches and made a PG-13 flick. It's okay as a PG-13, but it could have been so much better worse more if it were rated R. At least then we would have been able to see some more shark action. Obviously, this...

Slender Man
The whole Slender Man phenomenon was a huge deal about 6 or 7 years ago. Why they decided to wait until now to release a movie about him is a question that will probably never get answered. The good news is, this movie is so bad that we won't have to worry about it in about two weeks when it finishes its theatrical run. This is easily one of the slowest horror flicks I've ever had the misfortune of enduring. It's about 90 minutes long, but it feels so much longer. Then, on top...

Blackkklansman
Spike Lee is at it again with another piercing film that will make you think while you laugh and cringe. And this time it is based on a true story. This movie is filled with incredible acting, amazing writing, great suspense, biting comedy, and so many moments that will make you squirm in your seat. It is powerful and meaningful, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. (Until the end, but we will get to that in a minute). The film is perfectly cast and all of the actors make it feel...

Dog Days
Oh. My. Goodness. Do you say congratulations to a film that is very much in the running for one of the worst movies of the year? If so, congratulations, DOG DAYS, you're a terrible waste of time! I don't care how much you love dogs, I don't care how much you love ensemble cast movies, none of that matters anymore. There is nothing that can save this movie from being the dumpster fire that it is. Here are the only good things about this movie: 1. Vanessa Hudgens and John Bass...

The Darkest Minds
There is no doubt that Amandla Stenberg has become one of the best young actors in Hollywood today. Unfortunately, this movie leaves a her in a position to have to carry the whole thing. She does a great job, but there is only so much she could do to save a mediocre script and story. The whole thing feels like a poor man's version of DIVERGENT. The kids are separated by talent, it's distopian, a girl and a small group of friends buck the system and try to start a revolution. Sound familiar? This...

The Spy Who Dumped Me
For a comedy like this to work the spy story still has to be a good one. It can't be a fluff story with a bunch of laughs. This one almost gets there. It starts off really promising and has several great moments, but the story gets convoluted along the way. It is a funny film, so if you need some good laughs you will get them. The only downside to the funny is that Kate McKinnon's character wears thin quickly. I love McKinnon in everything she has done up to this point, but by the halfway...

Christopher Robin
When I saw the first trailer for this film I was intrigued. I wondered if we were going to get another classic like HOOK, or another powerful and emotional film like GOODBYE, CHRISTOPHER ROBIN. Unfortunately, what we ended up with is a formulaic, slow-moving film with no discernable audience. For the first several minutes I thought we were going to get the emotional movie, there were several scenes that were poignant but also dark. The themes were too adult for children to understand and the pacing was to slow to keep the kids engaged. About 15 minutes...

Mission: Impossible - Fallout
It is quite amazing that after 22 years and six films the Mission Impossible franchise is still going strong, and the movies are getting better all the time. This is another edge-of-your seat. nail biting, action flick that will have you holding your breath and squirming in your seat trying to avoid the things flying at you. The cast is incredible with several past characters making dramatic returns as well as a strong role for Henry Cavill. They all bring a dynamic to the film that could not be achieved by lesser actors. ...

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies
If you are a fan of the TEEN TITANS GO! TV series this is a must-see movie. It is the movie you never knew you wanted, but now that it is here you realize how empty your life has been without this amazing film in your life. It is crazy funny, irreverent, (but not to the point where it is no longer family-friendly), and goofy just like the TV show. But it also gives us so much more to love in this longer form. You will laugh until your sides hurt, and then you will want to...

Eighth Grade
To date, this is easily one of the best films of 2018. It is a perfect slice of life story about one of the worst years in all of our lives. One minute you will be laughing, then you'll be crying, and after that you'll want to climb into the movie and give the poor girl a hug and tell her everything gets better. It does a great job of using the story to mimic the emotions and awkwardness of eighth grade. In fact, it does such a good job it my take you some time to...
