This is one of those stories that pops up as a feature film every generation. On one hand it makes a lot of sense because it is a story filled with beautiful images. On the other hand, the story is not nearly as great as the visuals and the two main characters are thoroughly unlikable.

Mary is obnoxious, treats everyone with disrespect, and refuses to do what she is told. Colin is a whiny, defeated, brat. It makes zero sense that these two would ever become friends, and even less sense that it would be Mary pushing for the relationship, but alas that is the story.

This rendition sticks close to the book (with one massive exception), probably more so than any of the versions before it. This means that it is slow, dreary, and cold. There are woefully few moments of levity or even just a break from the annoying.

Yes, the visuals are beautiful, but that doesn't make up for the rest of the film. This one is not worth your time or your money.
