Plot Summary
A female scientist and a bored housewife start a friendship that leads to more in mid-1800's England
Director
Star #3
This is one of those films where I feel like I saw something completely different than just about every other film critic. I keep hearing "Oscar contender" thrown around for this one, but I just don't see it.

Sure, it's a historical drama that speaks to issues of the today, which are always markers for at least a decent awards run. But this one is missing one massive component that most major awards contenders have. It's not compelling in the slightest. In fact, I would go so far as to say it is boring.

There is very little conflict, except that which is contrived, so there is no tension to build up the suspense. The plot lends itself to all sorts of drama and conflict in the time period in which it is set, but it seems the filmmakers forgot to put any of that into the final cut.

I would like to say that the acting is great, but I'm not truly convinced that it is. The characters don't have to deal with difficult issues that would change them, so they don't have a true character arc. (Unless you count it as a half arc that you assume gets completed after the movie ends, but that doesn't count in my world of movie watching).

I can't even say that it is beautiful and picturesque. In fact, the sets and cinematography are quite dull and dreary. It just feels like there is no heartbeat to this film. It might have been something special in another form, but the way it is isn't worth your time or money.
