This film is based on a trilogy of books released around 2010. That was the apex of the Young Adult dystopian craze. Eleven years on, we still get a good reminder every now and again at how many wild and thought-provoking books explored that genre.

Imagine living in a place where your thoughts were always on display for everyone to hear, but you had no idea what the women around you were thinking. A difference like that could cause some serious issues. This film explores several of those issues.

For you readers out there, the movie does a good job of staying true to the books. Yes, it is three books crammed into one 2-hour movie, so a lot of the source material had to be left out of the finished product, but it still feels like they hit all of the major points.

Daisy Ridley is spectacular as always, and Tom Holland gives a convincing performance as a teen trying to constantly control his thoughts, to no avail. Their interactions seem very true to their characters.

My only issues with this film are that "the noise" (the constant audible thoughts emanating from every man), gets really annoying really fast. The other issue is that for a film that crams three books into one movie, it feels like it drags along at times. There are definite pacing issues.

That said, this is still an entertaining and thought-provoking film. If you are a fan of dystopian YA you should get to a theater and check this out soon.
