2020 has been a weird year. With the theaters being closed most of the year there have been a lot less movies released, especially movies for kids. Maybe that is one of the reasons why WOLFWALKERS feels so special. Or maybe it is really special and would stand out in a normal year, too.
Either way, this is a film that is very much worth seeing. It is one that almost the whole family can and will enjoy.
One of the best aspects of this movie is the animation. I don't know if I've ever seen anything quite like it. At times, it almost feels like you are watching an unfinished project. Other times it feels like you are seeing the most beautiful drawing you've ever seen. There are a lot of straight, bold lines that cut through the screen, making the animation pop in ways that are unique.
Beyond the animation, the characters are interesting and deep. the story they tell is formulaic, but told well, and the music is beautiful. If you are a fan of Irish accents, this film has them in abundance. If you have trouble deciphering words spoken with a heavy accent, this may not be the best film for you. It takes a lot of concentration to catch everything they are saying.
If you are looking for a fun evening out with the family you should give WOLFWALKERS a try. It isn't your typical, commercial animation style, so there may be a bit of a learning curve for some, but it is a wonderful film that is worth seeing.
