VANGUARD is the best comedy of the year. There is only one problem. It's not supposed to be a comedy. From the amateurish CGI lion, to the car chase scenes filmed at 30 miles per hour and then sped up on film, to the early 1990's-looking graphics superimposed onto large computer monitors, it looks like the effects budget for this movie was somewhere around $36.25 (plus tax). But the good news is the bad effects make for some great laughs. Aside from the effects (and some truly atrocious, yet refreshingly hilarious, acting by...

It must be near the end of October. Why? Because even in the middle of a pandemic Hollywood still manages to push out bad horror flicks. (That, and I looked at the calendar just before I wrote this). While this is not your typical, do-something-stupid, make-all-the-wrong-choices, the-person-acting-like-a-jerk-is-about-to-die horror flick, it tries to be smart and moody, but it just falls flat. What makes this one worse than most is that it is nearly a full hour longer than the average horror flick. Most of them clock in at 80 or 90 minutes. Sometimes...

Not to make this too simple, but, for the most part, if you've seen one Liam Neeson one-man-against-the-world movie, you've seen them all. It is true, he has a special set of skills, and he uses them all in every film he does. It would be nice to see him use another set of skills by playing a character of another type, but he knows these flicks are his wheelhouse, and so do we. I would rank this film somewhere in the middle of his similar films. It's not great, but it isn't terrible either. It's...

Shortcut

When a feature film clocks in at 80 minutes you can be assured of one of two things. It is either going to be jam-packed with action and suspense, or it should have been a short film that got stretched into an 80-minute film with 30 minutes of fluff. SHORTCUT is jam-packed with fluff. To put it in perspective, the opening credits, (where nothing happens), are four minutes long. The end credits are 6 1/2 minutes long. Ladies and gentlemen, that makes up nearly 15% of the film's total running time! Add...

When the first trailer was released for TENET many months ago I was so excited to see it. After all, it was directed by Christopher Nolan who has made some fantastic films, including a couple of my all-time favorites. It looked like it was going to be a smart, sci-fi, version of a James Bond flick. Then I finally got to see it. And I was thoroughly disappointed. First and foremost, the premise of the film is incredibly confusing, to the point where it was virtually impossible for the...

Ben Affleck is spectacular in an otherwise average movie. He gives one of the best performances of his career. A performance that he describes as "very therapeutic", since he started filming this film the day after he got out of rehab from his very public relapse. He also owes a huge "thank you" to his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, who called the director and saved the film from being shelved, even before production began, after Ben fell off of the wagon. I'm happy for him that this movie got made. Especially if it is helping him to stay...

There is a saying in Hollywood, "never do a movie with kids or animals." Well, the good news for Harrison Ford is that he didn't have to work with any animals in this one. I know that sounds impossible, but it is true. The dog in this movie is 100% CGI. As far as I could tell, there wasn't a single real animal in this entire movie. I know this because the computer animations were so bad that it kept pulling me out of the story. All of the dogs moved in odd ways, or too fast,...

The Photograph

What do you get when you put two amazing actors in the lead roles of a film with a terrible script? You get two incredible performances in a bad movie. There are a lot of people that should apologize to LaKeith Stanfield and Issa Rae for wasting their talent in a film like THE PHOTOGRAPH. First of all, the title isn't even right. It should have been called The Photographer, or Miss Mae, or The Letter, or a thousand other ideas that would have been more fitting. Second, this is...

The number one rule of an action flick is that there should be a lot of action. This movie breaks that rule, and so many others. To say this movie is slow would be an understatement. A better description would be to say that this movie gives you an incredible opportunity to enjoy a 110 minute nap. I will say that it is not the fault of the actors that this flick is so bad. They all do a pretty good job in their roles. Unfortunately, the writing and directing are just...

Oh, Universal Studios, what have you done? Not even a month ago you gave us all hairballs and forced naps when you released CATS. Now we have to play guess-the-country-where-Dolittle-grew-up because his accent changes literally in every scene, and we have to try and remember who is who because you thought it was a great idea for Dolittle to have 10 talking animals go on the adventure with him. (Plus two kids). Alas, it seems as though this movie was doomed from the start. It was plagued with rewrites, re-shoots, redraws, and missed release dates. In fact,...
