Instant Family

As the father of two adopted daughters I was immediately intrigued by the premise of this movie. Adoption is rarely portrayed properly in film, and in most cases it is shown in a very negative light. (Just think about all of the times you've seen an older brother yelling "you're adopted" at his younger sibling). INSTANT FAMILY totally nails it. If you are an adoption-friendly family you need to get to the theater immediately and see this movie. It is so dead-on perfect. You will be laughing hysterically one minute, crying the next, and feeling all warm...

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have teamed up for some very interesting and good action movies. This film is by far the worst of that bunch. The opening scene should be one that is full of suspense and precise action. Instead it falls flat to the point of almost being boring. Even when the action starts the excitement level never really gets going. Once into the meat of the movie it becomes quickly apparent that there are very few characters, if any, to root for. Everyone is a jerk, or evil, or an evil...

If there is one interesting thing about this movie it is that I keep on assuming that the next TRANSFORMERS film can't possibly be as bad as the one before it, and yet I continue to be wrong. Michael Bay has sunk to a level of such horrible story telling and entertainment that, I'm guessing, even Hollywood executives are starting to have second thoughts as to whether they should give him a $250 million budget and a green light on his next venture. (Nah, I'm just kidding. Hollywood execs will always throw stupid amounts of money at Bay). ...

Patriot's Day

This is the third film Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg have done together (LONE SURVIVOR and DEEPWATER HORIZON), and all three have been well made and well worth seeing. Out of the three of them PATRIOT'S DAY surprised me the most. This film would have been interesting if it had been a just-the-facts movie, but the emotion and strength that is layered into this film makes it something special. I saw this movie almost two months prior to it's release and have seen about 80 movies since then, and my mind still returns to scenes from...

Deepwater Horizon

This film is based on the story of the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It is fascinating and infuriating all at once. I’m not fully aware of what led up to the catastrophic failure of the Deepwater Horizon and its systems, but the movie plays the conflict between the BP executives and the drilling and safety people very well. The BP executives are a little one-dimensional, meaning that they are basically money-hungry jerks all of the time. Maybe they were that way in real life, but it feels a bit contrived in the...

TED 2 is full of stupid, juvenile, and raunchy humor. It has a ridiculous plot, the story is thin and the characters are all one-dimensional idiots. That said, this movie is stupidly funny. I missed the dialogue of a good five minutes of this film because the audience was laughing so hard we couldn't hear it. There are three scenes in particular that are easily three of the funniest scenes I have ever seen on the big screen. A special "thank you" needs...

The Gambler

THE GAMBLER is full of spectacular acting in a spectacularly bad flick. This is one of those films where I feel like I saw a completely different movie than most of the critics. I've seen many of them raving about this film, but I just don't get it. When the film begins it dumps us in the middle of the story, which I am fine with and many time enjoy, but THE GAMBLER doesn't give us any flashbacks or back story to fill in the gaps. At no point are we...

Transformers Age Of Extinction

This may become one of the highest grossing films of 2014 just by the nature of the franchise and its "summer blockbuster" release date, but this movie is horrible. The only thing it has going for it are the incredible special effects and world-class explosions. If you care at all about plot, character development, or meaningful dialogue go see something else. If you are only interested in things that go boom while spouting off cheesy lines you'll still think this 2 hour and 45 minute movie is an hour too long, but you'll be relatively happy. I would...

LONE SURVIVOR

LONE SURVIVOR, based on the true story of Operation Red Wings, is very difficult to watch, but it worth every minute of your time. Wahlberg and the rest of the cast do an exemplary job of portraying the impossibility of their situation without straying from their military training. The tribute to the real heroes of Operation Red Wings at the end of the movie is worth the price of admission itself. If you liked ZERO DARK THIRTY you will love LONE SURVIVOR.
