When I first heard about this film I had all sorts of alarm bells going off in my head. A Christian, church camp musical? There are so many ways that this movie could have easily become a disaster.
Thankfully, the writers and the people behind the movie made sure that it stayed on track and it ended up being a fun, quirky film that the whole family will enjoy.
The main characters, played by Bailee Madison and Kevin Quinn, have great on-screen chemistry. They are a lot of fun to watch. Quinn is a standout star that has all of the makings of the next Zac Efron. He can act, sing, and dance as good or better than most of Hollywood.
Yes, this movie is goofy and awkward, but that is one of the things that makes it so endearing. It takes itself seriously enough to be a solid and entertaining film, but it doesn't take itself so seriously as to lose the fun and crazy side of teen life. It's like High School Musical goes to church camp and meets up with some John Hughes-esque drama when it gets there.
One of the best things about this movie is the music. The original songs are catchy, but there are several iconic songs from the 80's and 90's that will stir up all sorts of fun memories for any of you that grew up during that time. (Be on the lookout for some great cameos as well).
If you are looking to watch something with the whole family this weekend, this would be a great choice.
