I am a huge fan of the theatre. I've seen close to 100 live musicals. I love going and experiencing the dynamic intensity of a live production. I have been enthralled, enraptured, and mesmerized by dozens of musicals. I have been happy I've seen dozens more. And I absolutely hated one.
When I saw CATS several years ago I was so bored, annoyed, and couldn't have cared less about any of the characters that I walked out of the show at intermission.
This time I had to endure the whole thing.
To be fair, I think that if you are a fan of CATS, you will probably like this version, too. So go give it a shot. If nothing else, at least you'll have the new Taylor Swift song to look forward to.
However, I think you are going to hate the characters played by Rebel Wilson and James Corden, because the director allowed them to play their roles as Rebel Wilson and James Corden. It is weird, abrasive, and takes you out of the story every time one of them is on screen.
As for everyone else, CATS is a complete waste of time. There are things never explained, there is no character development, the conflict makes no sense, and the ending is just weird.
About all this movie is good for is a semi-decent sound track to get in a good 2-hour cat nap.
