Here we go. Another comedian taking his turn as a homicide detective. This time it is Chris Rock, and while he does a pretty decent job of making the jump out of comedy, there are several scenes where he really oversells it.
This is another in the long line of horror flicks in the Saw franchise. As with most of the others, it does a good job of focusing on an aspect of social commentary, but it is also filled with clichés, cringey dialogue, and one-dimensional characters.
The worst part of this film is that I figured out the whole thing about 15 minutes into the movie. From then on it was just waiting to be proven right. Sure, they try to throw in a few twists and turns, but the real story is way too obvious.
If you are hoping to be terrified, this film will not get you there. This is more of a slow burn horror flick. Yes, it has a couple of nasty slasher moments, but it isn't really a jump scare kind of flick.
This isn't going to be on anyone's top 10 list this year, but it isn't terrible either. If you need a few scares with a few funny lines thrown in from Chris Rock, then give this one a shot. Otherwise, you aren't missing anything by skipping this film.
