Jodie Come has has quite the year. First with Free Guy and now The Last Duel. They are vastly different films, but she dominates in both of them. Her powerful presence gives this film the important edge that it needed to turn a good movie into a great one. I don't know if she will be up for any of the acting awards, but she deserves to be in consideration.
The movie itself it quite interesting. It's one that shows the "same" scenes over but from differing viewpoints. It makes for a compelling watch as you try to decipher what is truth, what is a lie, and what is ego getting in the way.
The film clocks in at 2 1/2 hours, but it doesn't feel long at all. It starts out quickly and then becomes somewhat familiar as it winds its way through the different lenses of the characters. The good news is that it never gets boring.
Matt Damon and Adam Driver do well in their respective roles, but Ben Affleck is the show stealer. His portrayal of a slimy royal is deliciously devious. One minute you adore him, the next you want to see him die in an excruciating way. He is only outdone by the king. And you will just have to see the movie to enjoy everything the king has to offer.
This is a very gritty and brutal film. The battle scenes are not glamorous, the story is hard to watch, and most of the characters are unlikable. It is a drama through and through with no reprieve. If you are okay with that you will be treated to a very good piece of cinematic art. If you like your wars to be choreographed, you may want to skip this one.
