Clint Says: Wait for the DVD

Helen Mirren could read the names in a school year book while sitting on a box in an empty room and I'd pay to see it. She is fantastic in just about everything she does. WINCHESTER is no exception. How they landed her for this role I will never know, but I'm glad they did, because without her this film would have been almost unwatchable.

She adds a much-needed level of suspense and desperation to the story that allows the viewer to actually believe that the happenings could very well be real. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, she sells it enough to at least make it feel real.

As for the story, well it leaves a lot to be desired. It feels at times like it is more of an anti-gun preach-at-you movie than a ghost story. It doesn't really matter what side of the gun debate you are on, preachy is preachy and nobody wants that in a movie. Especially a horror flick.

The scares aren't worth the price of admission, if that is what you are hoping for. Almost every one of the scares are the jump scares that serve no purpose but to annoy you with loud violins. The climactic scene is more "wait...what?" than it is scary, and several of the scenes are only worthy of a big eye roll.

If you are a fan of Helen Mirren then go see this movie. If not, then skip it. You aren't missing anything of note.
